If you’re nervous about your child’s smile on Halloween, you’re not alone. Many parents worry the same thing because Halloween is a time of cavities and enamel erosion. Even sickness! However, the good news is this doesn’t have to be the case for your child. If you prepare your child now, their smile can remain in tip-top shape this Halloween. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Denise M. Walthour, is happy to give you the tips you need.

First, make sure your child has a diligent and effective oral hygiene routine. This should include brushing twice a day (with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste), flossing once a day, and rinsing the mouth daily (with antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash). These things can strengthen your child’s chompers and keep the smile in top-notch condition, just in time for Halloween!

Second, bring your child into our office for their dental checkup if it has been six months since their last appointment. The treatments involved in this appointment thoroughly clean the teeth and gums, strengthen and nourish the smile, and detect as well as treat any dental problems. These treatments can lessen the chances of your child developing or worsening dental issues on Halloween.

Third, teach your child about the affects candy has on the teeth. Tell them that the treats can wear down the tooth enamel, attack the teeth, and develop cavities. Then, tell your child that you can’t let them eat all of their Halloween candy at once because of these things. You want them to have a top-notch smile, so you will need to make sure they only have a few pieces of candy a day. This can help them feel less shock and despair when you collect their candy when they get home that night.
