If you have a minor cosmetic problem with a tooth, a dental bond may be the answer. A dental bond is simply a resin, colored to match the surface of your tooth, that is used to repair damage from a chip, decay, a broken tooth, or to correct discoloration. It may also be used to lengthen a tooth that is too short. No surgery is required and no anesthetic is needed unless the dentist needs to remove decayed tooth material. A bond can be placed on your tooth in a single visit, and the procedure takes around 30 minutes.

After matching the color of your tooth to a color of resin, the dentist will slightly roughen the tooth and then apply a conditioning liquid. These processes will help the bond adhere to the tooth. Then she will mold the resin into the proper shape around tooth. The resin will be hardened with an ultraviolet light, although some dentists now use lasers. After the dentist trims and polishes the bond, you will be ready to face the world with a new smile.

Dental bonds, while effective, are not nearly as strong as your teeth. They can be damaged by tough foods, ice, chewing on pens, or by using your teeth to open packages. They can also be stained by what you eat and drink, especially during the first 48 hours after they have been placed. Naturally, you will need to continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day to keep your teeth healthy and your bond in place. When you visit your dentist for your regular appointments, she will check to make sure that the bond is in place and doesn’t need to be repaired.
